This week, God answered my prayer.

Just not the way I prayed it.

For weeks I had a number in my head, a picture of how it was supposed to go, a plan I had prayed over and worked for and believed God was going to bless. I had done my part. I had prepared. I had shown up. I was sure the answer would match the request.

Then the answer came back smaller than what I asked for. Different than what I pictured. And I sat there staring at a yes that did not look like the yes I wanted.

That is an honest admission. I trust God fully, right up until His answer disagrees with mine.

Then a song I wrote started playing in my head. Not a new one. One of mine. STRENGTH.

When I made STRENGTH as DJ Nevaquit, I was not writing about a good day. I wrote it because I needed it. I needed a song that said the thing I did not have the courage to say out loud: God, I cannot carry this on my own, and I am done pretending I can.

STRENGTH is one of five songs I have registered with BMI, alongside ANYWAY, BROKEN MADE BEAUTIFUL, GRATITUDE, and PRAISE THROUGH IT ALL. Each one is a page from my real life. This one is the page where I learned that God’s strength shows up most clearly when mine runs out.

The no that came with an explanation

The apostle Paul learned this in a way I will never forget. He begged God three times to remove something painful from his life. Three times. And God’s answer was no. Not silence. A direct no, with an explanation.

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. That is 2 Corinthians 12, verse 9.

Read that slowly. God’s power is made perfect in weakness. Not in strength. Not in the plan working out exactly as drawn. In weakness.

Paul’s conclusion changed everything for me this week. He said, therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

I wanted the strength to control the outcome. God offered the strength to trust Him without it.

That is a different kind of strength. The first kind gets you the promotion, the contract, the number. The second kind carries you through the door you did not choose and still keeps your joy intact. The first kind impresses people. The second kind builds faith.

Strength to the weary

Here is what Isaiah said to people who were tired of waiting on promises that seemed delayed.

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall. But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not be faint. That is Isaiah 40, verses 29 through 31.

Notice the promise. He does not promise they will never be weary. He promises strength TO the weary. The strength is not the absence of the struggle. The strength is the presence of God inside the struggle.

My honest inventory

So here is my honest inventory. The confessions on one side. The declarations on the other.

Confessions:

  • I prayed hard for a specific outcome and called it faith, but part of it was control.

  • When the answer came back different, my first feeling was disappointment, not gratitude.

  • I have confused God’s blessing with God’s agreement more times than I can count.

Declarations:

  • His grace is sufficient for me, even when the answer is not what I requested. That is 2 Corinthians 12, verse 9.

  • I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, including accept the door He opened instead of the one I wanted. That is Philippians 4, verse 13.

  • Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. I will hope, and I will be renewed.

What about you?

Did God answer you this week in a way you did not expect?

Maybe you are staring at a yes that does not look like your yes. Maybe the number was lower, the timeline was longer, the door was different. Maybe you did everything right and the outcome still surprised you.

Trust Him anyway.

Not because the outcome feels good. It may not, not yet. Trust Him because the God who said no to Paul’s request said yes to something greater: His own power resting on Paul’s weakness. The same God is working in your unexpected answer right now.

Every Sunday I share a 60 second devotional on my YouTube channel, DJ Nevaquit, as part of my Faith Sundays rhythm. It is free. It is short. It is there whenever you need a reminder that God’s strength is enough for your week. Come and be encouraged.

And if this post found you in a season where the answer looked different than the prayer, share it with someone standing in that same spot. You never know whose faith is being rebuilt today by one honest story.
